If you’re in search of a smart speaker that effortlessly modifies songs and adjusts volume using voice commands, then this advanced speaker is the ideal selection for you. In this article, we’ll delve into the diverse functionalities of this speaker and assess its worth as an investment in 2023.
Design of the Google Home Max White Speaker
Upon scrutinizing the specifications of the Google Home Max, one cannot overlook its resemblance to the Google Home Mini Blue. Nevertheless, upon physically interacting with and observing the speaker from different angles, this device is essentially an enlarged variant of the Google Home Mini.
The front-facing drivers of the Google Home Max are encased in a gray fabric material, while the remaining components of the speaker are constructed from robust and durable plastic. The exterior of the Google Home Max has a notably velvety texture when handling its various sections. Upon powering on the device, four blue LED lights embedded within the front-facing fabric drivers come into view.
These LED lights serve as valuable indicators for crucial information, such as battery life and connectivity status.
Controls and Connectivity
Operating the Google Home Max speaker is an absolute breeze due to its user-friendly controls that enhance the overall experience. The touch controls on the speaker’s top surface provide a particularly delightful interaction. They eliminate the necessity for clunky buttons or knobs that are often found on speakers.
Instead, users can effortlessly change songs, adjust volume, and perform various other functions with a simple swipe along the device’s top edge. Pausing and resuming playback is just as effortless, requiring only a tap on the touch controls.
Before utilizing the speaker, however, it is necessary to establish an internet connection. The speaker can be connected to the internet via WiFi, which we highly recommend, or through an RJ45 Ethernet cable. If the speaker will remain fixed in one location, employing a zero latency Ethernet cable would be the optimal choice.
Located at the rear of the speaker is a small cutout section housing the mentioned Ethernet port, a 3.5mm auxiliary input, and a USB Type C port. By utilizing the USB port, users can connect a flash drive or smartphone to play music stored on these devices through the speaker.
Google Home Max White Features
The user-friendly design is a key factor behind the popularity of the Google Home Max speaker. It operates through voice activation using Google Assistant, eliminating the need for buttons. This enables convenient hands-free control within range of the device.
Additionally, the Google Home Max excels in voice detection, ensuring accurate responses to commands. It can recognize up to five different voices, making it ideal for multi-user households. Other family members can operate the device without disturbing the primary user.
However, it’s worth noting that the built-in music player and streaming service only support Apple’s iTunes, rendering other popular services like YouTube Music and Spotify incompatible. Additionally, the speaker cannot be used for radio listening or gaming like the Sennheiser Game One gaming headset.
The Overall Performance Review
The Google Home Max boasts an extensive voice detection range, picking up commands even from the opposite end of the room. However, I observed that beyond a distance of five meters, slightly raising my voice was necessary for the speaker to register my commands. With two 4.5″ woofers and supported by tweeters, the speaker delivers impressive sound output, particularly at maximum volume.
Despite its compact size, the speaker produces exceptional sound quality. It delivers loud and clear audio that particularly shines for rock and heavy metal fans, with drums and bass guitar sounding impressive. The default equalization settings were satisfying, requiring no adjustments.
The mid-ranges were well-balanced, and the bass was exceptional, making it an excellent choice for hip-hop and techno enthusiasts who appreciate powerful beats. However, its high-frequency output could be improved, especially for vocal and guitar-heavy songs. This could be disappointing for audiophiles, but casual listeners are unlikely to notice the issue and can still enjoy the overall sound quality. In terms of sound output, the Google Home Max White speaker is on par with the Astro A40 TR headset and MixAmp Pro 2017.
In 2023, purchasing this smart speaker could be both advantageous and disadvantageous. On one hand, it excels in sound quality, low latency, and effortless device connectivity. On the other hand, Google has discontinued the series, resulting in limited support and updates for the Home Max.
This means your speaker’s firmware may remain unchanged indefinitely. If you desire the latest features, considering the Google Nest Hub may be more beneficial.
